Ever heard these names — Hans Zimmer, Nino Rota, John Williams, Patrick Doyle, or Nicholas Hooper? They have composed the perfect musical scores that resonate in our ears. Many of us have that supercool quotient of creating fantastic music. Google has come up with a new machine learning model that gives the users a chance to become a real artist and compose some of the finest themes one can ever hear.

About Blob Opera

Google gave the news of Blob Opera through the blog posted by Freya Murray, who works in Google Arts & Culture division as a Program Manager. Google developed a new machine learning model experiment named Blob Opera. The artist David Li, who lent his talents to Adult Swim (Cartoon Network’s adult-oriented block), devoted a good amount of time to create this model. It lets the user make their festive song on Google Arts & Culture section. In this experiment, the user can set the pitch and vowel sound of Google’s four festive blobs. Then, these four festive blobs can transform user’s musical ideas into exquisite and beautiful harmonies. Also, the user can record their musical opera score and share the same with family and friends. Through Google’s Blob Opera, one can witness the following voice registers:

  1. Bass
  2. Tenor
  3. Mezzo-soprano
  4. Soprano

Using Google’s Blob Opera

On opening the application, the user may find the four blogs that appear on the screen. The user can drag each blob’s pitch in the vertical direction, up or down. To set the vowel sound, they need to adjust the cursor’s horizontal movement. These blobs can grow taller or sway according to the dragging motion direction. Apart from this, other blobs can follow one blob’s pitch and vowel, considering a particular blob as a lead. Users can also mute the blobs with the speaker buttons present above their heads. There is a pine tree type button on the lower-right corner of the screen using which users can listen to the classical Christmas songs.

How Google developed Blob Opera?

The Blob Opera model taps and harnesses the voice as the original musical instrument. Google developed the machine learning model by creating a trained dataset on the voice of four opera singers. This trained dataset helped to produce a musical theme regardless of the skills required for music. To develop the model, Google recorded almost sixteen hours of the singing of the following singers:

  • Tenor
  • Christian Joel
  • Frederick Tong
  • Joanna Gamble
  • Olivia Doutney
  • Ingunn Gyda Hrafnkelsdóttir
  • John Holland-Avery

During the experiment, no user can hear the voices of the singers mentioned above. Instead, the machine learning algorithm understands what the user demands and tries to assess the theme. Once the data obtained that the model considers as a test dataset, it compares the same and extrapolates it with the trained dataset to generate the results. Hence, the resultant allows the user to play Blob Opera, according to the user’s pitch and vowel sound to produce the superb musical composition. As per the input given, the blobs respond and harmonize it for the output in real-time. However, if the user thinks that they cannot create such a fine musical opera, they can sit back and enjoy traditional classics like “Jingle Bells,” “The First Noel,” “Silent Night,” and “O Holy Night.”

Google’s 2020 Gifts Bonanza

Google has come up with many new things at the end of the year. Starting from Chimera, Google tried to make the users an artist who can design monsters of their choice to holiday-themed virtual coloring books (Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa), Google Arts & Culture section is always delivering something unique. They are ensuring that unskilled humans are not falling apart. After making the users coloring artists, they are ready to make them music composers. For Christmas, Google has its special Santa Tracker that holds a plethora of games and fun facts related to Santa Claus.

Conclusion

Google has delivered a complete package for its users to have an enjoyable holiday. The Blob Opera lets the user become music composers. So, use Google’s Blob Opera to the fullest to have lots of fun.
